WESTERN EUROPEAN BLANKET CHEST
The family name of the recipient of the first of these chests is French (coincidentally my mother's maiden name), whence the western European connection.
This cherry frame and panel blanket chest features pairs of bookmatched panels (a piece of wood sawn through its thickness and opened up like a butterfly) and simple brass hardware. The ogee molding around the top was cut with custom ground cutters- the proportions of the off the shelf cutters available at the time just didn't look right. It is 18 inches deep, 44 inches wide, and 22 inches tall. The lid measures 18 7/8 inch by 45 3/4 inch.
